Pushin' Boots

Shoes should be appropriate and are necessary; getting to the bank might put you onto spiders, snakes, as well as the broken bottle.

I don't recommend standing in unfamiliar water, unless you have steel-tipped boots, as there are some real crotchety snapping turtles that won't mind teaching you a lesson about where you put your toes.

It is also important not to make a lot of noise or sudden movements that can distract or spook nearby fish. You want them eyeing only the business end of that line. So have the kids throw stones at least 20 yards away. If you approach the bank and find the water churning with life trying to get away, your approach needs work.

Try to have the sun away from you, so that you don't cast a shadow on the water. Think of the water as a mirror: how far do you have to be from the fish so you don't cast a reflection.
